Indian pop idol Ishmeet Singh dies in Maldives after freak accident

News Update: Male' 21:15 - Reliable sources at the ADK Hospital have confirmed that Ishmeet died as a result of an injury sustained to his head as he dived into the shallow end of a pool in the resort where he was staying, Dhonveli Beach Resort. Earlier reports that he died of drowning is not true. He was given emergency medical assistance after the management was alerted by his friends who were at the scene but died within a few minutes of the incident. A police investigation is now underway.

Male’ – Local reports say that the winner of the popular Amul Star Voice of India 2007, has drowned and died this afternoon in a Maldives resort. Ishmeet is in Maldives to perform in a music show planned for this weekend. He arrived in the country today. He was taken to ADK Hospital Male' but was already dead when he arrived.

Ishmeet was a rising star in Indian music industry and was only 18 when he won the Amul Star Voice of India's famous title last year .

A couple of months back I was invited in Guru Tegh Bahadur Insitute of Technology in Rajouri Gardens, New Delhi during their annual festival to be a judge of an event. That evening Ishmeet performed in front of the delirious college crowd. I remember him telling the crowd that it was his first live performance in Delhi.

The winner of last year's “Voice of India” singing competition held by India’s Star Plus Channel, Ishmeeth Singh, has drowned in a swimming pool while in a Maldives resort.
Officials from the Chaaya Dhonveli Beach Resort where he was staying said that Ishmeeth had drowned between 5:15pm and 5:20pm while in the swimming pool of the resort.
“He went into the swimming pool with a couple of his friends this afternoon,” Marlon Robert, the Assistant Manager of the Resort, said. “None of them knew how to swim so he was using the baby (shallow) swimming pool. Since he didn’t know how to swim we had advised him not to use the big pool. Somehow or other he ended up in the big pool. When he couldn’t get out of it his friends apparently went looking for help.”
According to the Maldives Police Service, Ishmeeth’s body had been immediately brought to the ADK Hospital in Male’ after the incident. The doctor who had attended to him said that the cause of death seemed to be by drowning. Police said that their investigations were now proceeding.
The 19-year-old singer had arrived in Maldives Tuesday morning to take part in a show being held in Male’ by his contracting music company. The show was planned to be held during this weekend. Ishmeeth had emerged the winner of the “Star Voice of India” singing competition held in November last year.

Arrangements are underway to transport Ishmeeth’s body back to India, sources say.

The famous indian singer arrived in Male' this morning, to perform in the Star Voice of Maldives, short to be held on 1st August. He also participated in the Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar Show on Star Cahnnel. He is a pupular contestant of Star voice of India, and has many fans, in India and Maldives, and abroad.

He is a true fan of Shaan and considers him as his idol. He also admires A. R. Rehman and his dream is to sing for him.
He was among the top 2 finalists on Star Voice of India and was crowned the winner on November 24, 2007. He was also one of the contestants of Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, a singing competition on Star Plus channel and represented the Champions team. He was eliminated on June 20, 2008

Voice of India TV star Ishmeet Singh drowned on Tuesday in a swimming pool at Dhonveli Beach and Spa Resort in the Maldives.
The 19-year old pop singer was with friends when he entered the swimming pool despite being unable to swim, according to assistant manager Marlon Robert. The lifeguard was off duty at the time.
He was taken by a resort launch to ADK hospital in Male' following an unsuccessful attempt by the resident doctor to resuscitate him, Robert said.
Singh arrived in Maldives on Tuesday to appear in the Star Voice of Maldives on August 1.
He won Voice of India title in November 2007 and has since become a national celebrity there.
The incident happened on Tuesday around 5.15pm, when Singh and around six friends had been at the poolside. None of the boys could swim, Robert said, and they had remained in the children's pool.
Singh then told his friends he would go into the deeper pool, according to Robert.
"The fact is, this gentleman – without realising the gravity of it – went into the deep end [of the pool]," Robert told Minivan News.
ADK hospital Managing director Mohamed Affal said he had been dead on arrival at the hospital, but said he did not know the cause of death.
The police have confirmed the case had been reported and was under investigation.
Ishmeet Singh Sodhi, from Ludhiyana in Punjab, was the first winner of Voice of India last year. He had also participated in the Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar Show on Star Channel.
On winning the voice of India, Singh reportedly said: "I am not a trained singer, yet I managed to reach this far. It makes me very happy. However, I never expected to win this show."
According to Indian media, his family have been informed by phone. "We are too shocked to react. We have no other information so far," a relative told India's Economic Times.
And fellow Voice of India contestant Hars*** told a TV channel: "He was like a brother to me. I cannot even comment on what has happened. I cannot believe that he is no longer with us."
